Catfish McDaris

Gone Amazon

He tried normalcy, but love was

a delicate butterfly, in a tornado,

a facade of yearn and desire

Drink helped to forget to remember,

like ships inside bottles evading

the tedium of a burning world

Inside the circular glass walls knowledge

and serenity lived, oblivious freedom

floating on a precipice of madness

One quiet night he finished a bottle

and had a vision of a ship inside filled

with beautiful Amazon ladies, he

swallowed himself and disappeared.

Catfish McDaris won the Thelonius Monk Award in 2015. He has recently been translated into Mandarin, French, Polish, Swedish, Arabic, Bengali, Spanish, Yoruba, Tagalog, and Esperanto.
