If It Comes to That

I descend

along stony paths, scent

of water in humid

air, river glimpses

through woods or distant

thunder and motion of rain.

Every step echoes

along the nerves of earth.

Hands raking

rough bark, fingers

digging

through sucking

mud

I have found the ancient

ruts of road:

memory and shade,

a gully where bullfrogs

perch squat

on a well’s cold

lip, and moonlight

seeps through dark

flesh of night.

Whenever streaming

light bends

in shimmering

bands around mottled

shadows of oak,

or a willow’s

droopy silk,

or staccato

rhythms of birch,

I will

make ready

to go, and bless

your leaving if it comes

to that.
