Gary Glauber

Orpheus had the right idea,

start with what you know,

who you are, the intricacy

of your particular predicament.

As those waiting for inspiration

grow old and soddenly shapeless,

you dream of agile French girls

dancing agitation into bonhomie.

Writing is three parts elucidation

of self-confidence trapped in nature.

Walk slowly, pay careful attention;

see where that brick wall holds the love.

Feed the senses in a primitive way,

holding component words at bay,

arranging, displaying, inveighing

in search of form marrying content.

Like the swirling torrent of gusty wind,

it is soon beyond you, a missed moment,

a sleeper’s contrition in light of wasted day,

despondent dilemma turned endless apology.

Gary Glauber is a poet, fiction writer, and teacher, living in Bedford, New York. This April he took part in Found Poetry Review’s PoMoSco project. Recent poems are published or forthcoming in Blue Heron Review, Crab Fat Literary Magazine, Pilgrimage Magazine, West Trade Review, Silver Birch Press, Blast Furnace, Calliope Magazine, The Bookends Review,, The Legendary, Xanadu, and Think Journal. He is a champion of the underdog, who often composes to an obscure power pop soundtrack. His first collection, Small Consolations, is due out in Summer 2015 from The Aldrich Press. A chapbook entitled Memory Marries Desire (Finishing Line Press) will be available this fall.
